These birds belong to the family of the Phasiandae, and inhabit the Himalayan Mountains, in Afghanistan to Northern Pakistan, to Northern India and southern Tibet. They are remarkable birds, iridescent in colors and live in open forests and among stands of Rhododendron at altitudes of some 8,000-16,000ft (2,500-5,000m) they feed on grass and flower seeds, tubers, bulbs, berries and insects. They tend to prefer nests with shallow hollow, overhanging rocks, or fallen tree trunks on steep hillsides often hidden among tall grasses. Status sustaining
