Cranes are symbols of long life and good luck in the Orient, and the attractive Manchurian Crane or the Red Crown Crane are prominent in their art. Cranes are, in fact, long-lived birds. A crane will defend a large average of wetlands and grasslands as their breeding territory. Intruders are buffeted by trumpeting duets of the defending pair. In a secluded area, a platform nest is constructed in shallow water or in trees. Typically two eggs are laid and both sexes assist in the incubation and care of the young, and the young will stay with the parents until the onset of the next breeding season. The status of these cranes are listed as endangered.
