Close to extinction over much of its range of southeast Asia, these cranes are the subject of a vigorous reintroduction program in Thailand, Phillipines, and elsewhere. Captive propogation centers have been established in China, Germany, Japan, Thailand, Russia, and the United States. Programs are underway to use captive stock for reintroduction. Cranes that have been reared in captivity, isolated from humans, manipulated through hand puppets, and crane costumed people, readily join wild cranes and thrive. Their population is increasing but is still endangered.
