The great blue heron is a cautious and suspicious creature which today has few enemies. The mature bird has only the bored hunter or untortured boy with a gun to fear. We should remember that the slender steel grey heron is resilient, which has contributed to its success. The decline of the species was when it was in the age of plumes and many lost their lives to vanity. However, public outcry was beginning to be recognized and legislators began to construct laws to protect these endangered birds. Today the numbers have increased to be delisted as endangered, but still threatened due to encroachment and habitat destruction.
